Usually defective O2 sensors are detected by the OBD system and reported as diagnostic trouble codes. Unless someone gives me another direction to go I will most likely start with the O2 sensors being they are easier and cheaper that the other two things I think it might be. The question I have about this though is I have seen bad O2 sensors cause this even though the computer doesn't show a fault in them. The reason why I bring up the converters is that when I get on the gas hard it as that sulfur smell but only when I am getting up in the rpms. And that is an expense fix to try as is the timing chains being replaced. I have toyed with the idea of the one or more of the catalytic converters might be stopping up but I don't know how to check that or have a muffler shop within 100 miles of me. Don't know if that is just the ageing motor or not. My check engine lght is not on, I know this dosen't mean nothing is wrong though.Īlso my gas mileage has dropped almost 5mpg over the past year. I don't think the two are related problems. Maybe I am jumping the gun on the timing stuff being messed up? It like I have a stuck lifer on start up at times (not all the time just every once and awhile) and once I rev the engine it will quit 99% of the time. Mine to me sounds like a spark knock around 2500rmp's but it is not as loud as spark knock on my 89 Ranger 2.3L I had, on it all I had to do is put premium gas in it and it would stop. I have to say mine sounds nothing like that.
